Reason:
Our approach was to find a good use case for the style transfer. I had just finished the movie "Everything, Everywhere, All at once" and really enjoyed it. I loved the idea of jumping between universes, and how cool would that be to do in real life!
The reason we used windows, was that it is still slightly too slow to not be disorienting to users. We came up with the idea of treating your room like a Tardis, and added some Hitchhikers guide to the universe humor to explain the situation. Now users won't be motion sick, and can still look out the windows!
We thought it would be a shame not to be able to experiance a full style change though, so going through the door is a great way for brave users to fully insert themselves into alternate realities.
Final thoughts:
Hackathons are fun! I much prefer to focus on the story and design of the product still, but creating a complete concept is a great way to inspire thinking and use-cases for new tech.
